Read Hunger Games and Harry Potter first– be prepared to need to read the rest of the series immediately. Kite Runner and Shanghai girls are also excellent.

The Glass Castle… I read it about four years ago and it still haunts me. Definitely read it. I’m sure it would strike me even harder now that I have a child.
Does this mean you haven’t read the Harry Potter books? I do think you should read at least the first one just to know what it’s all about. I enjoyed 1–3, and then 4 was so boring, I lost interest in the series. However, when book 7 came out, I read the end to find out how all the characters end up.
